Price increases have meant that this is not the absolute bargain it once was. Nevertheless the place pulls off the compromise between large-group canteen dining and a more intimate experience since being redecorated. The dauphaunois potatoes are to die for. |

Get out of the house |
£13.90 for two courses and a bottle of house wine, so when two of you eat, it's two bottles of the stuff, free. Sounds like a good deal and on paper it sure is. Early evening midweek and the place is packed out already. Not a great choice on the prix fixe, but it is taken off their a la carte.
Mussels and a chicken liver terrine to start. Mussels even looked overcooked and they looked like they had been sitting hot for two long in the kitchen, gone cold, then thrown back in the pan again. Generous portion, but the watery insipid almost milk like liquid they were served in, was tasteless. The terrine was also seriously overcooked to the point where it's colour was grey and the texture was very grainy. It was served with a sickly sweet, but tart redcurrant number. The baguette that was served before the started even arrived was chewy and believe it or not, undercooked!
Main courses of a pork loin 'chop' with a tomato based sauce and a salmon fillet with something I can't remember. Pork Loin was tough and overcooked, the sauce was okay but the overpowering flavour of tinned tomatoes wasn't my cup of tea. The salmon was cooked to the point where it was almost white, all the goodness and flavour drained clean from it. No side orders or vegetables served with the mains, which is fine by me as I never eat them, but some form of carbohydrate would have been a bonus.
Service was present, but the waitress never was. The house red that came with the 'meal deal' was very light and very easy to drink, but we didn't even touch the second bottle. Desserts were offered at a supplement to the prix fixe price and you could choose from a small selection on the blackboards that we couldn't see from where we were sitting.
The whole experience was pretty shocking and it beggars belief how this place can be so busy. Total bill was £27.80 and as reasonable as that is, I won't be back. Ever.
The worst dining expereince I've ever had. Not just in Birmingham, but anywhere. Shocking stuff. The Chef deserves a damn good kicking.
