First review so be kind!! My sister lives in Leeds and we have been to Akbars there on a number of occasions and have enjoyed the food . I was very excited when Akbars opened in Birmingham and went when it first opened. I was very dissapointed with the food and especially the service. The experience was so poor that I vowed not to return. With the sister in Birmingham fancying a curry I was persuaded to take the plunge and return. The first thing to comment on isis the welcome, which is poor. Not being able to reserve a table is annoying as it having to wait in the lounge area when tables are clearly free. Not being able to put drinks ordered in the bar on tab grated. The decor of the restaurant is ok but it appears a little like "scarface" Tony montana was the designer! The service is very hit and miss , but thankfully has improved. I understand a number of the waiters have been brought from Bradford in order to improve things and it has made a difference. We ordered drinks. Not being able to order draught beer is annoying. We ordered food to share on the table. The curry last time was very salty and the lamb in particular was overcooked and bullet had. The food quality has improved imensly and is now on par with Leeds and Bradford. The highlight of the meal was the Lamb Nihari, which was a lovely tender lamb shank in a rich sauce. The korai Fish was tasty and the chicked balti was flavourful. The naan was quality but the pilau is a little greasy though a major improvement on the grey sludge prieviously served. The food was filing and hence no dessert ordered.

Overall I am glad the food has improved and that is the chief reason why I would return. The overall experience though still lacks a friendly welcomb which Is needed to encourage me to make this my regular curry joint. The curries are about £ 8 which is about right. Not quite fine dining but more fancy balti house.
