Price increases have meant that this is not the absolute bargain it once was. Nevertheless the place pulls off the compromise between large-group canteen dining and a more intimate experience since being redecorated. The dauphaunois potatoes are to die for. |

Chez Jules has had a makeover - gone is the graffitti (indeed one suspects attempting to write on the ceiling would lead to a swift exit...) and whilst the main floor area is still refectory style, a raised seating area has been added for a more intimate dining experience. We went on Tuesday night to try the two courses and a bottle of wine for 12.90 (per person...) This is a great deal if you can mange a whole bottle of wine to yourself!!! There are a choice of four starters and four main courses (the same as are offered on the two courses for 8.90 before 7.30 PM) We started with moules and Poached Pear in Red wine with a stilton mousse - the latter was very attractively presented although my partner felt the addition of walnuts would be nice. For main we went for Chargrill Rib Eye Steak (and it was!) and Ratatouille and Goats Cheese Gateau with the gratin daupinios (these are included in the price, but any other veg is additional) Both meals were excellent, the steak cooked just as requested. The two bottles of house white were very palatable. All in all this is a good deal coming in at 25.80 for two, tasty food and a bottle of wine each, although the morning after is not so great!! Get to Chez Jules whilst the deal lasts!
