When taken out for lunch yesterday, I suggested that we went to Cote. The sun was shining and their terrace is a sun trap, and with the walls around us being covered in ivy and other climbing plants, it really is a pleasent place to sit for a long lunch. The tables are well spaced and laid with white cotton napkins and cutlery. Complinantary filtered water is bought to the table. The interior's fairly stylish and a modern take on a retro look, I loved their floor tiles.
We arrived at just gone 12 and the staff were in the middle of a tasting to get to know the specials, so when we taken to the tables and given the a la carte and lunch special set menu, he could only tell us about the goats cheese and caramalised onion tart. Not his fault, and it's good to know that, in theory the staff understand what they are serving, but if service starts at 12, the staff should know what they are selling at 12. We ordered a rose wine and a V&T to drink whilst looking at the menus.
I knew what I wanted already, Niciose salad with grlled tuna steak, perfect for a lite summer lunch. The menu states that the tuna comes medium rare, and I requested that it was rare. My companion chose the salmon fish cakes, these came with a butter sauce of some sort and spinach sauted with shallotts. More drinks ordered and the food arrived 10 or 15 minutes later. The fishcakes looked
pretty good. Two fairly large cakes, atop a mound of spinach, surounded by a pool of sauce. R had ordered some new potatoes as a side dish, these were lightly buttered a sprinkled with parsley and were deemed to be vey good.
my salad looked great on arrival but when i cut into the tuna, it was well done. Well cooked tuna is an abomination so, for the first time ever, I sent something back to the kitchen. It only took a couple of minutes to come back, this time with a very thick cut, perfectly rare tuna steak atop the salad. Much better, the salad ingredients were crisp and fresh and the eggs slightly soft. Im going to mark for the second tuna steak as the staff were very polite and quick to rectify the situation.
This isn't the best place to eat in town food wise, but when the sun's out it is the best place to sit and eat good qaulity, simple, classic dishes. I'll no doubt be back when the sun is out from time to time.
