With a colleague and decided we wanted a full English so we drove fom West Brom as I said I remember hearing that Angels did a good breakfast

So 20 minutes later and two laps of the jewellery quarter looking for parking we entered Angels.

The place is very small with about 20 covers in total with 16 occupied so doing a good trade for 11 o'clock in the morning.

Most tables set up for four and you nearly have to ask the person behind you to stand up so you can get in your seat if you are on the window side.

Toilet - one for male and female use, you have to give the door a bang to close it but what was I expecting its a greasy spoon, unfortunately I was expecting more from the reviews on here so was disappointed.

I am not sure if this place does evening trade any more if it does I would score the decor as a 1 as a greasy spoon I will give it a 5

Service - Table service as chap walks 3 yards from kitchen to the furthest table to be fair you could nearly have table service if he reached over the counter with a good stretch. Knives and forks and sauces are all in a pot on every table not the cleanest but adequate.
Service was just ok to be fair he was busy as I think he was cooking as well as serving so no time for smiles etc but efficient all the same.

Food - Menu has normal breakfast listing with a few quirks thrown in, such as American which is a full English with chips !! and then there is another three pages of sandwiches / burgers / baked potatoes
We went for a "normal breakfast" and a "large" breakfast I think priced at £3.60 and £4.40 respectively.
Normal fare of 1 sausage, egg, bacon, hashbrown, beans, tomatoes, toast (coated in margarine) and mushrooms . The large was the same with two sausages and bacon.

What can I say it was OK it wasn't memorable in anyway, sausage was overcooked thats all I can think that stands out.

Had two teas came in a pot to share

Price - as mentioned above what you would expect to pay for a breakfast, all in it was £10.50 for the two so fair value.

Would I travel from West Brom to go there again - No

Would I go there if I was already in the vicinity - Yes just about

Would I take the Mrs for a meal in the evening there - maybe if I was looking for a quick divorce.

RIGHT TO REPLY

Received from Jonathan Spector - Angels Cafe. Posted Sunday, October 25, 2009

I'm very sorry flipflop didn't enjoy their breakfast at Angels Cafe. By the way, our current opening hours are 8.00am - 4.00pm  Monday - Saturday.

We do always try very hard to please everyone, occasionally we are just swamped with over-demand - resulting in over-crowded tables, and the toilet facilities certainly also become over-used at peak times. As leaseholder, much as I'd love more space, I'm unable to extend the floor-area, including the toilet, or anything else, from the too-small floorspace which I rent from my landlord.

Angels Cafe now attracts more than double the number of customers each day, as compared to a year or so ago
So right now, everything is a bit over-stretched - including the often exhausted and overworked staff!

I apologize unreservedly for failing to smile for each and every customer all of the time - every customer deserves at least that small welcome! However, I and my partner each work 60 hours + per week, and we've had exactly one day's holiday since January 1st - and all for a salary barely half the national minimum wage...

I've been trying for ages to persuade our cook to not too much over-cook bacon and sausages, unless their order explicitly requested this, but it's not always easy to get every precise order out as quickly as everyone always wants according to their exact preference.
Please just ask and say when you order, and we'll ensure you get exactly what you want!

Our 'New York' breakfast includes bacon, eggs, grilled tomato, toast and pancakes with maple syrup. No chips. But chips can always be ordered by any customer as a side with any meal, if desired.

We will continue to try harder, but we are trying to cope with some problems of success - on October !st we had to register for VAT, which added a whole lot to our menu prices. Extra staff are being right now recruited and trained, which should put a smile back on all faces again soon!
