Being brought up as a lad on "proper" Hollands Pies from Manchester, I met a friend from Cradley Heath for lunch, and we decided to give this "world famous" pie place a go.
LOCATION
We visited the Stourbridge branch. It was easy to find, on a main road, with plenty of onsite parking. The area was otherwise quite uninspiring.
DECOR and ATMOSPHERE
As a converted pub there was a bar with large benches and tables. At around 3 in the afternoon, there were about 5 other customers, and it remained that way throughout our stay.
Quaint is one way of describing the decor, with sawdust on the floor, and old fashioned signs adorning the walls.
MENU
Exactly like that on their website with a range of pies around the 8 quid mark, as well as some other dishes to tempt the taste buds.
FOOD
We ordered the platter to share, and two "desperate Dan’s cow pies."
First to arrive was the platter.
Served on a large wooden board, and apart from the salad, it was ALL freshly deep fried in batter. It brought back memories of my student days in Scotland, ahh.... deep fried pizza! (Yum!)
It was freshly cooked, but very greasy. It looked small for £7.50. There were 2 of everything.
Black pudding (about the size of a quartered medium orange) had a good flavour. The chicken was ok (about 4 inches long), but the batter was more chippy like than tempura. Garlic bread, very greasy, (just bigger than a beer mat.) Eating the mushrooms was like a eating a sponge full of oil. Salad - a few leaves, a token gesture towards being healthy.
After suitably lining our arteries our pies arrived.
Advertised at 4lb in weight, it looked impressive at about 25cm diametre of puff pastry on a pie dish about 15cm deep. There were two cornets (10cm long) of puff pastry arranged in the pie giving it the "cow pie" look.
There were several layers of crisp puff pastry on top and I was half expecting the "horns" to be a sausage roll, but they were just a rolled up pasty.
The filling was steaming hot. The steak and kidney chunks were about an inch in size. The meat flaked apart as I dug my fork into it. Cheap cuts, but in my opinion it gives the best in flavour for a pie. Carrots, potatoes and tasty gravy made up the rest of the dish.
After about half an hour, I finished off my pie, bar some pastry. I could have finished it off, but I prefer short crust pastry. My friend only managed about half of his. (Mmmm who ate all the pies...... I did, but I am training myself to take on a 100oz steak)
SERVICE
You order at the bar, and they were friendly as they cleared away our plates. No complaints.
VALUE
Overall, I felt it was expensive for what it was. £26 for food, and about £5 for drinks. (4 diet cokes!) The food itself wasn't too bad but it was essentially chippy fare, of pie and deep fried grub at a premium.
They had some various offers such as a BOGOF, but they weren't running on the day we went.
OVERALL
I would probably only go back as a novelty with visitors.
