A teenager was sacked as a waiter from Ocean Dragon restaurant in the Arcadian for being white, according to a report in today's Metro newspaper. David O'Neil successfully sued the restaurant after his hours were cut by a new manager who handed his shifts to workers from China. But the 19 year-old law student represented himself at a Birmingham employment tribunal and was awarded £5,000 for breaches including race discrimination and unfair dismissal. The teenager, from Selly Oak, described how the restaurant tried to ignore his complaints after his hours were cut from October 2010. "Although I kept contacting the manager, she kept informing me that there were no hours available but she would be in touch," he said. When he wrote to complain "they denied all knowledge of me", he added. |
