European authorities have given Gloustershire Old Spot pork protected status alongside Champagne and Parma ham. The meat is the latest addition to the growing list of British food and drink to have gained privelleged status throughout Europe. A total of 42 British products, including Melton Mowbray pies and Cornish clotted cream, have now won European protection. The decision is a victory for breeders of the pig who have campaigned fror years to see the distinctive English breed protected. Caroline Spelman, the Envirtonment Secretary, will make the announcement at the Three Counties Show in Malvern today. The announcement bans farmers and sellers across Europe from passing off a pig not from Gloucestershire as an Old Spot. |
