Jabbar Khan replies to Midlands Curry Awards
4th Sep 2009
Following Mr Rahman’s reply on 4 September to my earlier criticisms of BBL and the Midlands Curry Award, I have to make the point that the credibility and reputation of an organisation is not confirmed by its guest speakers, but that it also depends on the extent to which it meets its legal requirements.

As a registered charity, BBL (Birmingham Bangladesh League) is required to declare its income and expenses to the Charity Commission where these are above the Annual Return £10,000 threshold.

Book Review: The Good Food Guide 2005
8th Nov 2004
The 2005 Good Food Guide breaks new ground by including a celebration of poetry and food; perhaps not the most obvious allocation of space in a publication such as this, but indicative of the nature of the book as one that is informed by the hand of an active editor, in this case, Andrew Turvil.
Book Review: The AA Restaurant Guide 2005
6th Nov 2004
There's little point reiterating the strengths and weaknesses of the AA approach to their restaurant guide - this has all been done to death in previous reviews of the book (see the articles section that considers the editions from 2002 onwards) so the following comments concern themselves with the changes to the 2005 guide and the extent to which it offers a fair reflection of the dining scene in Birmingham at the end of 2004.Ringing the changes at AA command centre, this year's guide comes wrapped in a blue cover, perhaps because Michelin dropped the word 'Red' from their publication and this might have caused all sorts of confusion, or perhaps not.

The Walnut Tree Inn Restaurant, Abergavenny

A Turkey-free Christmas (or How I got so Fat)
8th Jan 2003
(In which the author identifies sources of high-quality meat, provides tips on how to cook it and spends an inordinate amount of time consuming fat).
Hands up everyone who had turkey for Christmas! Now keep your hands up if you actually enjoyed it – hmmm, not many I suspect, so why do we keep on buying the wretched things? December issues of every magazine from Radio Times to Railway Modeller have sported articles professing to impart the secret of cooking a turkey that doesn’t taste like recycled cat-litter.

The Christmas Lights
1st Jan 2003
As a concession to the festive spirit that seems to be reeking from every pore at the moment, and to shame those pubs who persist in hanging up the same tired old Merry Christmas decoration in metallic gold and red we thought we'd post some pics of a pub that does it properly.

Night and Day has been on the block for a few years now, selling itself (£1.25/$2.00 is the cover price but it seems to be distributed FOC, and if its not then I apologise for an act of inadvertent theft) as 'The essential visitor guide to Birmingham and the heart of England'.
